GRADE WEIGHTS (approx. %'s)
70% = Acting activities 20% =Plot creation & plot presentation 10% = Speeches (the above are approximate values that can slightly change per each different class according to class size & behavior however, activities will always be weighted the most.) |
Academic Grading Scale
Min. - Max. 90 - 100+% = A 80 - 89.9% = B 60 - 79.9% = C 50 - 55.9% = D 0 - 54.9% = F |
Citizenship Scale
See Rules Page |
Behavior:
Following all rules doesn't warrant an Outstanding grade. Outstanding students have positive attitudes, volunteer often, & promote student learning. If a consequence is not completed by the last day of the trimester, the student will earn an Unsatisfactory citizenship grade. Participating in the activities is vitally important to learning in Drama class, therefore if a student chooses not to participate more than once, that student will earn an Unsatisfactory citizenship grade. All students are expected to try their best and attempt all activities.

Activities
Activities will focus on students performing in front of an audience (classroom of students) and will not require preparation (improvisation). Although the activities can be a lot of fun, all students are required to be safe for the performer and the audience. Performances are also expected to be appropriate concerning content, gestures, and staying within school dress code throughout their dramatic body movements. Activities for all classes will include: pantomime, mimic, and improvisational one act plays. The year long class will also have the following: copycat, correct the cat, impersonations, best theatrical death, and more. Students will be required to participate in these activities and will be graded according to a clear plot, their effort, energy, and acting ability. Before each activity and throughout the evaluation process, students are shown techniques to improve their performance, activities are modeled, and students are informed about grading criteria. Extra credit can only be earned if students participate in all the activities and behavioral consequences are turned in. For the year long class, all students must have completed the one act play.
ACTIVITY EVALUATION:
Students will be evaluated during their performances and given a grade immediately afterwards. The teacher will provide verbal feedback concerning the student's strengths and areas in need of improvement. This type of feedback is vitally important in the learning process because it helps the individual student as well as the student audience who are expected to perform as well.

Analysis
Students will watch classic television episodes and will break down the plot in terms of the following:
1) exposition (setting & characters),
2) main rising action (problem/goal) & foreshadowing (hint of climax)
3) climax (problem solved or not solved/ goal achieved or not) & falling action
4) resolution (effects of climax, lesson or theme, happily ever after or not, predictions).
Students will apply their knowledge of plot in activities like pantomime etc.
ANALYSIS EVALUATION:
Students will be required to explain their plot after each performance. To assist each student, a plot poster has been placed at the back of the classroom which can be used each time the student explains their plot.

History (EXTRA CREDIT)
Students will learn the history of live stage performance (theatre) and movies (theater). Although Greek Tragedy, Elizabethan Theatre, and others will be discussed and required as part of the history curriculum, the focus of theatre history will be on Charlie Chaplin. Students will be given the Charlie Chaplin information on their vocabulary sheets along with other required history terms. Numbers 32-40 on the vocab sheet will be required and will be included on their Charlie Chaplin history test. Chaplin was chosen due to being an iconic person within motion pictures whose work continues to inspire performers across the globe (refer to Charlie Chaplin page for more info.)
HISTORY EVALUATION:
Students will take a multiple choice test based upon the information given in class, the plot of the Charlie Chaplin movie they've watched in class, and all terms #32-40 on the vocab sheet (see Vocab Terms page).

Informal Speeches
Students will recite more than a few informal speech during each quarter. All informal speeches will cover things that have happened to them in their lives. Minimal preparation should be required.
1st quarter: As long as the student attempts the speech & growth is evident, each student will earn all the points. Time perameters set for each speech will slowly increase. The first speech will be 2 minutes. Despite each student receiving a 100% (as per the above), each will be evaluated so that they understand where they need to improve. This feedback will prepare them for earning their speech grade in the 2nd quarter.
2nd quarter: see rubric below.
TOPICS:
1. What was the happiest moment of their life?
2. What was the saddest moment of their life?
3. Scariest moment of their life?
4. What was the most painful moment of their life?
5. What was the most fun moment of their life?
6. Make something up and tell the audience at the end that it was all make believe!
Every Friday, students will recite their speech. If not all students are able to finish the cycle, the ones that did will earn extra credit points. The students that didn't have a chance to finish the cycle can complete any of the extra credit opportunities listed on this page. Students should be ready to go two days prior to their date in case of another student's absence.
EVALUATION:
Evaluation will be informal and student will be given verbal feedback. As students become more comfortable, and as they gain more experience they will be evaluated on more speech components. Teacher can write their informal speech grade in the student's planner if the parent would like to know what they earned AND if the student writes the teacher's feedback in pen beforehand. In that case, the student's planner should be placed on the teacher's desk with the student's name at the top.
A. Volume - 40 pts.
B. Inflection - 20 pts.
C. Eye Contact - 10 pts.
D. Audience Interaction - 10 pts.

Progress reports
If a parent can't log in to Parent Connect on Q then they can request their child's current grade to be written in their child's planner as long as the student presents their planner at the beginning of class. When the district mandated progress reports are sent, ALL students are in danger of failing (IDF) because half of the total points are still left to earn. This means that if there are 100 points in the quarter and the student has earned 50 points at the halfway mark, the student has a 100% A+. If that same student stopped working and failed to earn any more points, they would earn 50/100 at the end of the same quarter, which is a 50% F. ALL students will be given an IDF at the time of the progress reports AND their current grade will be sent to communicate their progress. If a student continues to complete all activities, strive to improve after listening to the teacher's feedback, and put forth an overall good effort in clas then they will end up with a good grade. There is no reason why all students shouldn't earn an A in the class with all the different opportunities to improve their grade and have success. SEE BELOW!

Student planner
Students should use their planner to write their speech/project due date and what was covered in class.
Teachers use the planner to communicate to parents concerning classroom behavior etc. If the teacher writes a note to the parent the student is REQUIRED to show the parent THAT day. Parent is expected to sign the note thus verifying they’ve read it.
Parents can write messages to the teachers in the planner, but email might be more effective due to limited space in the planner.

Why Should my child be
enrolled in drama class?
All students, regardless of career goals, will need the confidence and charisma to successfully complete a job interview. All of the NIS drama classes encourage preparation, improvisation, and speaking skills which are all required if one wants to make a good impression on a job interview.
All three classes promote communication in an entertaining way (much more), which enhances the following:
1) creativity & innovation (take current knowledge and use to create a solution/product for specific purpose)
2) reading and teaching children (Great for future parents, teachers, and entertainers)
3) giving presentations (Great for future high school and college students, business owners, heads of dept. & corp., bridesmaids, matrons of honor, best men, parents at weddings, anyone speaking at awards ceremonies, speakers at funerals, people in charge of training others for business or military, and MUCH MORE!)
4) analysis (Great for critical thinking which is applicable to most disciplines and core subjects)

vIDEO rELEASE FORM:
If you want to print out the video release form, you must download the form from the link directly below. Students only need to fill this out once with parent signature. What's VERY important is that students have adult supervision on all projects and all video projects are completed in a VERY safe and appropriate manner! If video guidelines are not followed, the video project could earn a zero.
